3 Tips To Prepare For Interior Painting

Posted on

It's time to give your home's interior a facelift, and one of the most dramatic ways to do this is by having the interior painted. Whether you plan to have only a few rooms done or have settled on having the entire home repainted, preparation is key to ensuring the job progresses swiftly. The following tips can help you prepare for the painting company's arrival.

Tip 1: Provide Access

Your painting service will cover any furniture or other items left in the room with drop cloths to protect the items from paint drips, but the painters will still need access to the wall. To achieve this, move all furniture as far into the center of the room as possible. You need to make sure the painters and their equipment can easily access the room, as well as move between any furniture and the wall freely so they can paint properly. If you are worried about an item being knocked and broken, move it to an area where the painters will not be working until after the painting is done.

Tip 2: Strip the Walls

Taking down artwork, pictures, and wall hangings likely seems obvious, but there are other items that will need removal. Curtains and window coverings also get in the way of the painters. You also need to verify what the prep crew will be doing and determine if it lines up with your expectations. For example, some paint crews simply tape off outlet covers and hardware attached to the walls. If your crew works like this but you want these items painted behind, you need to remove them from the walls before the painters arrive.

Tip 3: Clean Thoroughly

Dust and dirt in the room can end up on the walls before the paint has a chance to dry. While most painting crews will dust the walls they will paint, there is still the problem of dust being stirred up while the painters work. Counteract this by thoroughly cleaning the rooms to be painted before the crew arrives. Dust furniture, walls, and ceilings thoroughly. Small spiderwebs can be a particular issue with ruining freshly applied paint. Even though carpets will be covered, vacuuming is a good idea to cut down on disturbed dust in the room. If the walls are particularly dirty, such as greasy walls in a kitchen, you may also want to scrub them down before the painters arrive.
