Tips for Repainting the Outside of Your Brick House for a Colonial Look

Posted on

Have you been working from home during the Covid-19 crisis? If so, maybe you have decided that you have time to beautify your home. Perhaps you have already done spring and summer landscaping. Perhaps you have even painted the inside walls of your home. Have you decided to also do paintwork on the exterior of your brick home?

Maybe you want to give your house a colonial look. If you are looking for suggestions on how to do a professional painting job yourself, read on for some ideas that might be super helpful.

Choose Paint for the Colonial Look You Want

Before you go to your local paint shop, decide which color to select for the colonial look you want. For a subtle colonial feeling, go with soft yellow, light blue, or off-white for the color of the brick. If you want a more dramatic colonial feeling, think of going with deep red, medium gray, or dark gray for the paint color.

No matter the color you end up choosing, you'll want the best paint for outdoor use. A satin finish, acrylic-latex paint will be a good choice, as it will repel water and resist mildew.

Select Paint for the Wood

You'll want a different kind of paint for things like the wooden window shutters, the front door, and decorative wooden furniture. First, decide on the color of the paint. You'll want a color that will complement the color you chose for the brick. No matter the color you selected for the brick, white paint will be a good choice for the shutters. and wooden furniture.

You can add pizzaz to the front of your house by painting your front door royal blue or brick red. You'll want semi-gloss, stain-resistant exterior paint that will wear well even in inclement weather.

Paint for Wrought Iron Objects

Do you have a wrought iron fence, wrought iron furniture and decorative wrought iron lamp posts? Add interest to the outside of your house by painting wrought iron objects a deep green, dark gray, or black. If you chose gray for the color of the brick, then you could choose colonial red for the wrought iron paint. If you want a subtle look, choose something like off-white for the wrought iron objects. For any of your exterior wrought iron objects, chose exterior grade enamel that will resist rust and that won't chip easily.

Besides painting the exterior parts of your house, don't forget to give attention to small things that might be overlooked. For example, if you have brass hardware on the front door, polish it so it will look as good as new.
